What is Biophilic Interior Design?
ROOTS IN FENG SHUI
Connecting people with nature is a philosophy like feng shui, a practice that dates back over 3,000 years in China. Feng shui emphasizes harmony between humans and their environment. Bringing the outside in bridges the gap between indoors and outdoors by taking full advantage of natural light through large windows or glass walls; incorporating indoor gardens; and using outdoor views as focal points in rooms. Blurring the boundaries between outside and inside with patios, balconies, or other transitional spaces is said to reduce stress and enhance productivity.
SOME OF MANY BENEFITS
Research shows that biophilic interiors can:
- Lower blood pressure and stress levels
- Improve mood and cognitive function
- Boost productivity and creativity
- Support better sleep and recovery
THE BIOPHILIC DESIGN INSTITUTE
On its website, this organization sets three foundations for applying biophilic concepts:
Direct Nature Experiences – plants, water, light, air, animals.
Indirect Nature Experiences – natural materials, colors, shapes, and imagery.
Space & Place Conditions – creating environments that feel safe, inspiring, and connected to local ecology
Registration is now open for the Institute’s 3-month online course for designers, architects, and others interested in learning more about Biophilic Design. ~ Perla Lichi
