Everyone deserves a luxurious and dreamy bathroom to soak away the stress of the day. Your bathroom is a refuge, so why not light it accordingly? For some reason we often overlook the bathroom lighting. But arguably, it deserves thoughtful consideration.

The room you start and end your day in is a place to relax and recharge – whether it be with a steam shower or a spa tub – and the lighting requires some extra thought.

A good lighting plan is a series of layers — placing ample light where it is needed for showers, shaving, or putting on makeup, for instance, while other light sources enhance the overall mood of the room. As we discussed in our previous blog post, the variations of lighting include task lighting, ambient lighting, and dimmer switches, which are especially useful in the bathroom.

The most important task lighting in any bathroom is vanity lighting. This lighting works the hardest to illuminate your face for grooming – shaving, makeup, brushing your teeth, etc.  Vertical fixtures or sconces mounted on either side of the mirror are best for casting an even light across the face. Avoid recessed ceiling fixtures directly over the mirror. These cast shadows on the face, making daily grooming rituals more difficult.

Ambient light, typically a central ceiling mounted fixture, fills in for natural light in the bathrooms, since windows are usually at a minimum there. Consider a pendent lamp or chandelier to dress up the space and give it character.

Finally, choosing the right bulb is essential. A crisp white light tends to render skin tones most accurately, with halogen bulbs being the best option. Halogen bulbs cost a few dollars more than standard incandescent but can last three times as long.
